Japhet Tanganga 'on Newcastle radar' as Tottenham youngster attracts transfer interest

Tottenham Hotspur have endured one of their best transfer windows after snapping up five new signings this summer, as Antonio Conte builds a squad that is capable of competing for trophies next season.

But the signing of Clement Lenglet, who has arrived on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona, has put further jeopardy over the future of one of Tottenham ’s homegrown players, who now finds himself falling further down the pecking order in Conte’s list of defensive options.

And the player in question is Japhet Tanganga who, after enduring a promising start to his Spurs career, now finds his chances limited and is attracting plenty of interest from elsewhere, with Newcastle United now backed to bring him up north.

Following reports that AC Milan are keen on landing the 23-year-old, Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb have now claimed that the Magpies are now in the running to sign Tanganga and want him on an initial season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy.

The report goes on to say that Spurs would be ‘very happy’ with such an offer, which would mean that agreeing a future fee with the north London outfit, as well as personal terms with Tanganga, are the only things separating the defender from a move to Tyneside.

And with the former England under-21 international appearing to be facing an uncertain future in north London, with injury preventing him from progressing and impressing under Conte, a move away from the Lilywhites could now be very much on the table.

Would Japhet Tanganga moving to Newcastle on loan be a good move for all parties involved? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

There is no doubting that Tanganga has quality, having broken into Tottenham’s first team as a 21-year-old during the 2019-20 campaign and since going on to make 43 appearances in all competitions for the club, but you could be forgiven for thinking his time is nearly up.

Although Conte opts for a system that involves a back three, Tanganga still finds himself behind Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez and now Lenglet, despite his ability to also operate at right-back, a position which Emeron Royal and Matt Doherty currently occupy.

And a move to Eddie Howe’s Magpies, where he would have a much better chance of securing regular first team action at St. James’ Park, could be likely to happen now more than ever, with finances also not expected to be a problem for the richest club in the world.

However, Newcastle have already rebranded their whole defence in the last seven months. In January, they signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for £12 million and Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion for £13 million, while Matt Targett arrived from Aston Villa on loan.

And this summer, Target was then secured on a permanent transfer for £15m after heavily impressing during his four-month spell, before long-term target and marquee signing Sven Botman arrived for a whopping £35m from Lille, not to mention Fabian Schar signed a new two-year contract back in April.

However, with Tanganga’s ability to also play at right-back, he would provide perfect competition for Trippier in that position, while arriving on a loan deal this summer would suit Newcastle perfectly, considering they’ve already spent £75m on four defenders this year.
