Japan’s parliament has passed a bill relaxing its 19th-century imperial succession rules amid concerns of a shrinking royal family, but has retained rules insisting that only paternal-lineage men can become emperor.
The revisions include adoption of distant male relatives to father future heirs and allowing princesses to keep their royal status after marrying commoners.
