Japan smashes visitor records amid overtourism cries. Will its new tourist tax calm the surge?

Japan's insatiable popularity has reached an all-time high, as international visitor numbers from January to September exceed 30 million for the first time ever.

According to the country's national tourism organisation, 3.26 million foreign tourists arrived in Japan last month - marking a 13.7 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
