Janice Robinson’s X Factor appearance led her to always be 'authentically myself'

Former Livin' Joy star Janice Robinson has admitted her appearance on the X Factor in 2018 helped reinforce the importance to "be authentic and myself".

The songstress, 54, wowed judges with an emphatic audition on the singing contest as the large crowd was brought to its feet.

It was a performance which rolled back the years as she belted out her '90s classic Dreamer - which she has recently re-released with a brilliant new take with DJ Lodato.

While Janice impressed on stage once again and made it to the live shows, she eventually finished in 14th place in series 15 of the show.

And while the larger-than-life star admits she was grateful for her time on the show she admits it did make her set up some boundaries.

She claims that the show's producers didn't know she'd still have star quality and possibly expected her to be "tragically awful" as they focussed on her age on motherhood during her interview tapes.

While confessing there were many positives to her time on the show, she candidly confessed she didn't handle the fact people now thought they had constant access to her too well.

She said: "I came from an era when I had notoriety. You had to write a fan letter - open it up in my personal time. So, for me [the X Factor exposure] was an overwhelming amount of people.

"And I think I found myself needing to centre myself, to balance the level of admiration I have out there - to have a conversation with myself."

Janice continued: "I had to have a conversation with myself and ask how I want to handle this stage of my life in the spotlight. And I think I had decided that I was going to set up boundaries.

"I was going to make sure that I was authentically myself in every scenario and keep the boundaries and set the narrative to where I'm comfortable. I wasn't going to let anybody take me into an uncomfortable place. I'm a real person."

And she admitted she is pleased her audition is still inspiring people around the world and is showing young people it doesn't matter how old you are, if you are yourself you can always succeed.

She added: "It showed young people not to worry when you hit 25, don’t worry when you hit 30, don’t trip if you’re 40.

"As long as you have something to offer to people that gives them a euphoric feeling, that gives them hope, then you can do it as long as you want.

"You have to have a positive narrative and a positive mind to lead a positive life and that’s what I swear by."

Janice has recently brought a new take to her iconic dance anthem Dreamer alongside DJ Lodato.

The catchy tune adds an updated take to the worldwide hit and she gushes "it's so nice to release it on a new generation and to see how they bond with it. It’s for the new kids."

She went on to beam: "I love to see people smile. I love to see people happy when they hear my music."
