Janey Godley opens up on heartbreaking challenge of 'reassuring' loved ones about cancer diagnosis

Janey Godley has opened up on the challenges of speaking to loved ones about her cancer battle.

The Scots comedian underwent a hysterectomy for ovarian cancer last week.

Janey previously told fans she's fighting a stage 3b form of the disease, meaning she'll live with it for the rest of her life.

Following her gruelling surgery, she's revealed the emotional struggle she's now facing and how hard it is to "reassure" friends and family about her health.

Janey said: "What you end up doing is you end up reassuring everybody else. And it's not something I've ever been prepared for my whole life is how to discuss these emotions with other people.

"Stage three means that I'm going to need further treatment probably means that I will live with this all my life until I die, whenever that is and it probably means that I'll be chasing, chasing, chasing ways to stop it from spreading."

Janey, who went viral for her Nicola Sturgeon comedy voiceovers during lockdown, initially thought she would get back to touring following her operation and never imagined she would need chemotherapy.

She has now been told by medics she will need further treatments and chemotherapy for the rest of her life.

She added: "It probably means that I will be going through chemotherapy, which probably means I'll have moments of profound weakness and sickness but then again, not everybody gets that.

"So the bottom line of what I'm trying to say is, as no matter how many ways I discuss stage three cancer, nothing is the same as anybody else's experience.

"It's my cancer. It's my diagnosis. I now have to watch how I say it to other people, in case it upsets them."

Janey, who stayed with a friend immediately after the operation in order to get her head round the diagnosis and receive special care, also revealed she doesn't expect to be able to perform much in coming months.

She said: "Looks like this s****y cancer means I won’t be working much this year, but if you feel like supporting me by ordering my hand crafted cards and books on http://janeygodley.com."

Yesterday we reported Janey said thinking about her diagnosis had caused her to have short panic attacks as she processed the news.

She added: "I have very short panic attacks thinking about it but it is what it is and I don't really have any other options other than to go through with all this.

"I'm absolutely terrified. I'm not brave in the least, I'm frightened and in shock and I've got really good people round about me, that's the best thing I can tell you."
