Janey Godley marks three years since first Nicola Sturgeon voiceover as First Minister makes final speech in Holyrood

Janey Godley provided relief for a lot of us during the coronavirus pandemic, and it's incredibly hard to believe that she created her first Nicola Sturgeon daily briefing voiceover three years ago today.

Most of us sat in front of our TV screens in March 2020 - and across the months that followed - to hear Scotland's First Minister 's daily briefings about Covid and how it was impacting the country.

It was an extremely scary time for many but Scots comedian Janey provided some lighter moments and brought smiles to many of our faces with her humour.

She began creating voiceovers of her own take of what Nicola Sturgeon was saying, which even had the First Minister herself laughing.

At the time, Nicola Sturgeon praised Janey, even though she sometimes liked to use foul language.

The First Minister said: "Janey Godley is a brilliant comedian in my view, and her voice overs are very, very funny. They are very rude in terms of the language that's used so sometimes I don't feel I can retweet them but they are very, very funny.

"The really clever thing she is doing with them right now is making people laugh but if you listen to them carefully she is getting the key messages across very, very powerfully."

She added: "And so if humour helps us to make people understand what we should be doing right now then, all well and good, so I think she's doing well on that front.

"She's been doing these voice overs for quite a while, and let me just say not all the time but occasionally I watch them and I think, yeah ... she must have an insight into what I was really thinking at that point but I wasn't able to say it and she manages to voice it in her particular style."

And today marks three years since her first one and Janey took to Twitter.

She wrote: "Three years ago, my first voice over during the pandemic."

Many fans commented on Janey's post, with one saying: "Feels like yesterday but at the same time, a lifetime ago."

One said: "You were (still are!) brilliant! I’m sure Ms Sturgeon just wished she could actually say, what you voiced over for her!!"

Another wrote: "I absolutely loved these. You made my days, waiting for these to appear. I watched every one. Laughed, cried and yelled at the end "Frank, get the door". Superb."

While another said: "This was the moment I started taking the pandemic seriously."

One penned: "3 Years Since lockdown and this kept me sane thanking you."

Another said: "Absolutely brilliant from @JaneyGodley who kept us going through the pandemic. Miss #frankgetthedoor."

Janey became so well known for her Nicola Sturgeon voiceovers she actually won Best Online Content at the Scottish Comedy Awards.

In October 2020, the comic and politician even teamed up for a hilarious sketch in aid of the STV Children’s Appeal.

Janey marked the occasion on a day which is also fitting to the First Minister as Nicola Sturgeon made her final Holyrood speech on Thursday and was left a bit emotional.

Ms Sturgeon fought back tears as she mounted a robust defence of her legacy in her final statement at Holyrood as First Minister. The departing SNP leader said the Scottish Child Payment, extra childcare for parents and minimum unit pricing were among her proudest achievements.

She also said her status as the first female First Minister would give all women and girls the belief they could hold the highest office in the land. Sturgeon took over from Alex Salmond in 2014 and her eight years in charge covered covid, Brexit and calls for indyref2.

She said: “Being First Minister has been variously often all at once challenging, exhilarating and exhausting. Every single day without exception, it has been an utter privilege.”

She concluded: “Whether you voted for me or not… thank you so much for placing your trust in me.

“Words will never adequately convey the gratitude and the awe I hold in my heart for the opportunity I have had to serve as your First Minister. It truly has been the privilege of my lifetime.”
