Janey Godley hailed 'brave and inspiring' as she visits childhood home mum's 'murderer' lived with TV crew

Janey Godley has been praised for her bravery as she visited her childhood home in Glasgow with a camera crew, where her mum's 'murderer' lived.

The Scottish comic, who is facing a terminal cancer battle, shared a haunting snap of herself pictured standing on the quiet street.

Janey, 62, opened up to her 289k Twitter followers about how "difficult and tough" the walk down memory lane was, 40 years on from the death of her beloved mum, Annie.

Annie's body was found in the River Clyde during the 1980s and Janey has always claimed her mother's violent partner, Peter Greenshields, was to blame for her death.

Janey updated fans on Twitter on Monday, saying: "Today was difficult. I went back to my childhood home with a camera crew, back to the street where the man who killed my mum lived.

"Same time I got news my cancer marker number is low - memories were tough. Also facing terminal cancer and explaining this to people who meet me."

The star also visited the pub she used to run before finding fame as a comedian, and spoke of the memories it brought back of daughter Ashley's childhood.

She added: "Then we went down to my old pub in the Calton. Up our old close and the memories flooding in of Ashley being a wee girl hanging off the Victorian newel post on the staircase.

"It’s still there - with the Wally tiles on the walls."

Fans flooded to praise Janey for her "brave and inspiring" move, with many speculating a new TV show could be looming.

One person wrote: "Words are so easy to type but can't truly convey my deepest heartfelt pride. You are such an inspiration. I send you love and respect and hope it helps, even a little, with your onward journey."

Someone else added: "Thank you, for everything you do and have done. The world is a much better place with you in it xxx"

A third wrote: "Sweetie, we all go in the end. All that we can hope is that while we're here, we leave the world better than we found it. You've done that in shedloads. Sending mahoosive love xx"

"Brave too small a word x," added another fan.

Earlier this month the Glasgow comic paid tribute to her mum Annie on Mother's Day, which marked 40 years since she last saw her alive.

Sharing a picture of her mum, Janey wrote: "40 years ago, #MothersDay 1982 was the last time I saw my mammy alive, days later, she was murdered by her ex boyfriend and thrown in the River Clyde - her name was Annie Currie - she will not be forgotten #HappyMothersDay2022."

Janey has previously opened up about her mother's death and said in a way she was 'strangely blessed' that her body was found so soon after her disappearance.

She said: "Watching documentaries about women who went missing and years later their body is found, makes me feel strangely blessed that my mums body was found in River Clyde four days after she went missing, even though the guy that killed her escaped justice, I didn’t have to wait years.

"Some women were never found and although I still miss Annie (my mum) I am at peace that we never spent decades wondering where she is, that is such a trauma for families."

In one of her podcast episodes, Janey added: "Peter had been put in prison before he met my mum for beating up women but my mum always told me it wasn't true.

"She told me he'd killed a swan and cooked it once, mum also told me to never argue back with Peter.

"One night I found my mum lying on Peter's living room floor, he was about to attack her with an axe.

"One Friday night my mum went missing and she's been with Peter.

"On the Monday morning her body was found in the River Clyde.

"Police said there was no evidence to suggest Peter had done it."
