Singer Jane McDonald has reacted to a 'hilarious' meme that suggested she'd joined Rishi Sunak's cabinet.
The newly-appointed Prime Minister assembled his new cabinet on Tuesday (October 25). Michael Gove and Dominic Raab were among those who returned to their previous roles, with Suella Braverman controversially being reinstated as Home Secretary - just six days after resigning from the same job.
Now, a meme has circulated suggesting that cruise ship star Jane has taken up a new role in Parliament. In the style of the official cabinet member announcements, the post features a photo of the Yorkshire lass, with the caption: "The RT HON Jane McDonald, appointed Secretary of State for Cruise Ships and Entertainment."
Resharing the meme to her own Twitter page, Jane, who found fame after appearing on the BBC 1 docusoap The Cruise, said: "This is hilarious! A number of people have got in touch to congratulate me on this - just to confirm that it isn’t real. Someone put it on social media as a joke!"
Fans were amused by the meme and some even expressed their wishes to see Jane take on the made-up role. @NeverIron enthused: "You’d have my vote!" as @CaroleJ23452925 said: "You’d do a great job! X"
Twitter user @jessallen09 expressed: "I can’t believe some people took this seriously. Not that you wouldn’t be amazing of course," with an abundance of laughing-face emojis while @TeakleAlex said: "Well you jolly well should be."
"But if only it was true Jane. You’d certainly brighten up the cabinet that’s for sure," added @iankj, as @ginagee14 said: "It made me laugh but you'd be perfect for the role. Maybe someone should put the idea forward," with two laughing face emojis.
@lewispringle, who claims to be the creator of the meme, replied to the singer: "Oh, Jane I made this and what an honour to get approval (I think!)," with a grinning face emoji.
Jane is best known for taking us on cruising adventures around the world, while treating viewers to renditions of classic and original songs. But in September, the 59-year-old shared her plans to step back from the limelight following the tragic death of her fiance, Ed Rothe.
Ed, a musician best known for being the drummer in Liquid Gold and later The Searchers, passed away in March 2021, aged 67, after a battle with lung cancer.
