Jan 6 Capital Riot defendants in 'medieval' jail request transfer to Guantanamo Bay

Defendants locked up awaiting trial for allegedly taking part in the January 6 Capitol Riot have requested being moved to Guantanamo Bay due to the 'horrific' conditions in their Washington DC jail.

The 34 inmates, in a joint letter to a federal court, lashed out at the conditions at the prison describing it as having a "medieval standards of living".

The group listed a range of concerns from having to 'beg' for water and medical aid, to not being allowed visitations.

They have also reported their laundry is returned with "brown stains, pubic hair and or reeking of ripe urine."

D.C. Central Detention Facility is notorious for conditions there with complaints been lodged for years. In November 2021 around 400 federal prisoners were transferred away after concerns about conditions were raised.

The Jan. 6 detainees also complained they have been presented with critical race theory "propaganda" and "racially-biased information."

They added: "We hereby request to spend our precious and limited days, should the government continue to insist on holding us captive unconstitutionally as pre-trial detainees to be transferred and reside at Guantanamo Bay".

The onslaught on the Capitol, as Vice President Mike Pence met with lawmakers, led to several deaths, injured more than 140 police officers and delayed certification of Democratic President Joe Biden's victory in the November 2020 election.

Trump remains popular among Republican voters and continues to flirt with the possibility of running for president again in 2024.

The courts are working through the large number of defendents over crimes committed. Since around 900 people were charged with more than 400 already pleading guilty or being convicted.

One rioter who helped assault a police officer was sentenced to seven years in jail with the judge describing him as a "one man wrecking ball".

Kyle Young was sentenced in the US District Court in Washington after admitting to helping in the assault of a police officer.

He even took his 16-year-old son with him who took part in the fighting on the lower west terrace, including throwing a speaker which hit another rioter.
