Jan 19, 2026: ‘Very poor’ AQI in Lucknow despite rainfall

For this episode of Aaj Ka AQI, Newslaundry went to Charbagh Railway Station – one of Lucknow’s busiest transit hubs visited by thousands of passengers each day. But how safe is the air that these travellers are forced to breathe?

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, the nearest air quality monitoring station at Talkatora Industrial Area recorded an AQI of 330, categorised as “very poor.” PM2.5 levels were recorded at 330, while PM10 stood at 222.

What makes these numbers more worrying is the fact that parts of the city received rainfall last night. Rain usually helps reduce pollution levels, but today’s data shows that air quality in Lucknow remains dangerously high. The severity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that an international cricket match in Lucknow was recently cancelled due to smog.

Experts warn that toxic particles like PM2.5 and PM10 not only damage the lungs but also increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. A recent study has even linked Lucknow’s air pollution to a higher risk of diabetes.

This show is part of a collaborative campaign to tackle air pollution. Here’s how you can join the Fight To Breathe. Click here to power this campaign.
