Jamz Supernova’s six-year-old daughter has headphones for her own soundtrack; when Mum’s in the car, Mum chooses the music. Even Waka Waka is resisted. This is more than parental territorialism – for the DJ, label founder and BBC 6 Music presenter, the car is also a listening room. Driving, she says, is “active listening time”.
Jamz is at the wheel of the new fully electric Volvo EX60. We’re spending the day travelling around Bristol, visiting places that shaped her relationship with the city’s music scene. The proud Londoner describes Bristol as something of a “spiritual home”. She first came here in the early 2010s and quickly fell for its underground nightlife – the kind where you didn’t need a ticket or a plan; you could simply “walk into somewhere and catch a vibe”.
Our first stop is Thekla, one of Bristol’s most storied music venues. A hulking grey 1950s cargo ship moored in the harbour, it makes quite a contrast with the sleek, modern EX60. Jamz loves it. “It’s so Bristol,” she says.
