Jamie Redknapp sends Jude Bellingham transfer message to Liverpool as injuries pile up

Jamie Redknapp has urged Liverpool to go back into the market and sign Jude Bellingham to ease their midfield problems in a ‘needs must’ situation.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have drawn their opening two games of the new Premier League season against Fulham and Crystal Palace and a growing injury list has left them bereft of options. Many of those injuries have been concentrated in midfield, with Thiago (hamstring) Curtis Jones (calf) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring) all sidelined, while Naby Keita was only fit enough for the bench on Monday in the 1-1 home draw with Palace.

Those absences, coupled with a concerning lack of goal contributions from the options available, have led to calls for the Reds to dip back into the market and strengthen midfield. And their former captain Redknapp wants his old to bring forward a bid for Borussia Dortmund and England starlet Bellingham.

“It’s been a difficult start for them," Redknapp told TalkSPORT . “What it’s certainly shown everyone is that they are a little short in midfield.

“They said they are not going to go into the market, but I think they should and try and find a way to sign Jude Bellingham. That would be a brilliant signing for them. He’d be the one.

“Whoever looks after him, I know he’s got a great family unit around him, and they want him to have another year at Dortmund. Which is understandable because he’s done so well there and is learning the game.

“It does feel like it will happen in time that he goes to Liverpool, but sometimes it is a case of needs must. Thiago has already picked up a hamstring injury, and you’ve got James Milner and Jordan Henderson who aren’t young men anymore.

“Sometimes you have to get into the market as you don’t want to fall behind too quickly.”

Bellingham has been a standout performer for Dortmund since his arrival from Birmingham City in 2020, going on to register 11 goals and 19 assists in 93 appearances. The Bundesliga outfit have said to have put a £100m price tag on the 19-year-old, which has kept potential suitors at bay. But with a contract until 2025, next summer could be a smart time for Dortmund to sell before the teenager’s value starts to diminish.

Liverpool have shown they can act decisively and ahead of schedule when swooping in to sign Luis Diaz from under Tottenham Hotspur's noses in January.
