Jamie Redknapp makes Arsenal and Brendan Rodgers comparison in title prediction

Jamie Redknapp suggested the current Arsenal side reminds him of Brendan Rodgers' ‘chaotic’ Liverpool team as he backed the Gunners to miss out on the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta's men have enjoyed a sizzling start to the new campaign. Their 4-2 victory against Brighton at the weekend lifted them seven points clear at the top of the table with just one defeat to their name in the opening 16 games of the season.

The win at the AMEX Stadium was the Gunners’ fifth league success in succession and they are now in position to end their 19-year wait for Premier League glory after Manchester City dropped points at home to Everton in their latest outing. Despite that, Redknapp does not believe that Arsenal will be toasting glory come the end of the season.

The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder has compared the north Londoners to the infamous Reds side of the 2013/14 campaign that went close to claiming the club’s first-ever Premier League trophy. The Merseyside outfit looked the hot favourites only to dramatically collapse in the final weeks.

He is instead backing Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to be crowned champions for the third consecutive season. Redknapp said on Sky Sports: "I just think they [Manchester City] will catch Arsenal up. Arsenal have been magnificent, I love watching them, they remind me a little bit of when Brendan Rodgers was trying to win it with Liverpool.

"There's a little bit of chaos with the way they play but there's also a lot of beauty about the way they play and they're doing a great job."

Despite tipping Arsenal to miss out on the title, Redknapp is sure that the Gunners will return to the Champions League given their performances so far and potential upcoming business in January.

Redknapp added on Arsenal: "They were red-hot favourites for the top four last season and managed to blow that, but I do think there's a difference about them. [Martin] Odegaard has been magnificent, [Bukayo] Saka, they're talking about buying [Mykhaylo] Mudryk who is going to be a fantastic player."

Arsenal have an extremely tough assignment as they aim to continue their positive recent run. They come up against high-flying Newcastle at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Magpies occupy third spot after an unbeaten run of 13 Premier League games, although they were held to a 0-0 draw by struggling Southampton at St James’ Park last time out.

The Gunners’ assignments do not get any easier than that, with a north London Derby against Spurs to come before a clash with Manchester United. Title-rivals Man City also lie in wait in mid-February.
