Jamie Redknapp explains why Man Utd's Man City thumping has left Liverpool "furious"

Jamie Redknapp believes Jurgen Klopp 's Liverpool will be furious with Manchester United after their derby humiliation.

The Red Devils were comprehensively crushed 4-1 by fierce rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Kevin De Bruyne bagged a first-half brace, either side of a well-taken Jadon Sancho response for the visitors, before Riyad Mahrez grabbed two goals of his own in the second period to put the stamp on City's emphatic win.

The triumph saw Pep Guardiola 's side restore their six point lead atop the Premier League 's summit, though title-chasers Liverpool have played one game fewer.

Following City's latest success, ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp explained why his former side will have been enraged with United during Sunday's contest.

"If you were Jurgen Klopp or Liverpool players watching that, you'd be fuming," the Sky Sports pundit declared. "They didn't even try a leg in the second half."

As the Premier League heads towards the business end of the season, Klopp's side will no doubt be eyeing up potential opportunities where City could slip up and they could subsequently capitalise.

Should Liverpool win their game in hand and overcome City when the pair face off at the Etihad later in the campaign, they would find themselves top of the table on goal difference.

Needless to say, the Reds would welcome City dropping points to boost their chances of reclaiming the Premier League title and their match against United - one of the so-called 'Big Six' - would have been viewed as a potential stumbling block.

However, the Red Devils' feeble efforts to upset their fierce city rivals would have been met with exasperation by those on Merseyside.

Liverpool themselves are still to play City, United, Arsenal and Tottenham, while also facing the small matter of a Merseyside derby at Anfield.

In contrast, other than their critical clash with Liverpool, an away trip to sixth-placed West Ham looks the toughest fixture on paper for City in their relatively straight-forward run-in.

While Redknapp believes United's humiliation at the hands of City will have irked Liverpool, he also stated that the manner of the defeat emphasised the current gulf between the two Manchester rivals.

"There's a massive gulf between the two sides," he added. "What City have done over the past 10 years is they've created a team and they've thought about signings.

"With United, they've thrown together a team and they've hoped it's going to work.

"They've spent £50m on a right-back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and there's been no improvement since he's been there. The other full-back, there's been no improvement.

"At centre-back they can't find a pair, in midfield they're not good enough and going forward they played with Pogba and Fernandes up front and it didn't work.

"As a team, it's not working. It takes time and needs the right culture. Right now, United are a million miles off.

"Whoever comes in next is going to need so much time and so many things to go for him."
