Jamie Redknapp and Cesc Fabregas agree on Arsenal title chances amid Manchester City problem

Arsenal are top of the Premier League table at the halfway point of the season. Mikel Arteta's side are five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City and could go eight points clear if they win their game in hand.

The Gunners saw off Erik ten Hag's in-form Manchester United side at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, with goals from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka ensuring a 3-2 win. A first-half Marcus Rashford strike and a Lisandro Martinez header was not enough to stop Arsenal's title charge.

“Extraordinary,” Arteta replied when asked on his thoughts on the first half of the campaign. “It doesn’t get much better than that. We deserved the points that we have. I think we have played well enough to win most of the matches."

With Arsenal in a strong position heading into the second half of the season, Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Cesc Fabregas believe the Gunners have what it takes to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004. This is despite the view of Gary Neville and Roy Keane, who still back Man City.

"They [Manchester City] will hunt them down for sure, but I still believe that Arsenal have the resources to win the league this year," Fabregas said. "They have a manager that knows what he’s doing, they have a manager that will put pressure on his players, and what I like today with this young group of players was in the last five minutes they handled the game really well.

"You see Nketiah going into the corner and before maybe in my years we wouldn’t have done that, we would have just tried to play and score a fourth. I really like that mentality, they know exactly what they’re doing, and I think it feels it’s the right moment and the right group of players to achieve that."

Former Liverpool star Redknapp agrees with the ex-Arsenal captain. Asked if he thought the Gunners will win the title, he said: "Why can’t they? Pep’s interview after the Spurs game, you can see there’s something not quite right with them. He’s searching for the right team, the right formation, defensively they’re changing personnel all the time.

"I’ve seen Leicester win a Premier League - anything can happen - why can’t Arsenal win it? They’ve got momentum, quality, the manager, everything is going their way.

"They’re going to need little bits of luck of course, but right now I certainly think they can do it. Gary touched on it, the last team you would want in world football hunting you down is Man City, they’re the only contenders, it’s just between those two."
