It’s been good to see IMG plans in greater deal this week with them releasing their criterias for grading.
Obviously, some clubs aren’t happy. But it looks to me like it’s the right way to move forward. If you get a plan where everyone is happy then it’s not the right plan. One of the worst things you can do in life is try and please everyone so it’s good that a few are whinging. Rather than try and please everyone like we have in the past, we’ve got to create a plan that improves the game and I feel this is one is as good as any I’ve seen.
We have a great debate in this country over relegation and promotion based on on-field performance. It’s been part of our history and tradition in this sport for as long as we’ve had sport. But if nothing changes, nothing changes. This system gives more scope for more clubs to have access to Super League than the previous licensing model. And the more strong teams - the more we can get with Grade A - the better it will be for the game overall.
There is an importance on keeping fans and attracting fans as, at the moment, that’s where the game is struggling. We get good TV audiences but it’s key that we get new people interested in rugby league - and sticking with it. It’s good to see that IMG have recognised that is an important part of how we need to take the sport forward. It’s a crucial category.
Yes, there’s been a lot of talk about how there’s maybe too much emphasis on club’s social media accounts and getting numbers involved digitally, not just through the gate. But I think whether people like it or not, digital media is the way to attract new fans to any sport. Generally, people who have a moan about that are people who don’t understand it. So I’d urge them to make an effort to understand how important it is before they start moaning.
In terms of catchment, clubs who are looking to break in - like Newcastle and York - will be encouraged by what IMG have said in terms of how the points system works there. It gives them an opportunity but also makes sure those clubs who are in the heartlands, get their ship in order. You can’t control how close you are to a neighbouring club. But you can control factors in there such as on-field performance, stadium, social media and attracting new fans. That’s what they need to do.
