Jamie Murphy: Those comeback wins always feel that little bit better

Jamie Murphy admits there is always something extra special about dramatic comeback victories.

The St Johnstone attacker, a second half substitute at Easter Road, helped turn the tide in the capital and loved celebrations with the travelling support at full-time.

Saints recovered from a goal down by taking advantage of Kyle Magennis’ red card with Nicky Clark and Stevie May on target in a crucial 2-1 triumph. The winner arrived in the 82nd minute.

“Hibs were good in the first half and didn’t let us play,” Murphy said. “They pinned us in.

“But I thought the boys were great in the second half. The manager made some changes and it worked out for us.

“Once they had the man sent off, I always thought we were going to score.

“Experience comes into it when you have a few players over 30 out on that pitch - players who have played against 10 men plenty of times and know what to do.

“When you’re losing and come from behind to win, it always feels that little bit better.”

Clark and May both found the back of the net with impressive headers.

Murphy told the PA: “You want your strikers to be in the six yard box.

“It’s a great header from Nicky and Stevie is in there again to finish off the second one.

“You always know what you are going to get from Stevie. There is always a level of performance that he is going to give, which is always very good.

“Everyone in the team can rely on him because you know he is going to put the effort in for you week in, week out.”

May’s winner sparked great scenes in the sold-out away end and resulted in his new celebration The Griddy - inspired by Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings - making a return.

“The boys like the NFL and that is where the celebration comes from,” Murphy smiled.

“I think he might be the only one who tries it but we’re all behind him watching. If he scores every week, he can do whatever he wants.

“Everyone was just delighted in that dressing room because we’ve had a couple of disappointing results.”

Murphy made sure to heap some praise on the travelling support who, even when the chips were down, backed the team with passion.

“I was warming up when we conceded in the first half and the fans never stopped singing and getting behind the team,” Murphy recalled.

“We’re going to need that, especially at times in a season where it might look down rather than up.

“Of course we want to be winning every game, that never changes. We can only do that with their support and on Friday it made a big difference.”
