Jamie Carragher tells Jurgen Klopp next Liverpool transfer after Dominik Szoboszlai signs

Liverpool have announced the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai - and Jamie Carragher has already told Jurgen Klopp which position to target next.

Hungarian midfielder Szoboszlai, 21, has joined from German outfit RB Leipzig in a deal worth £60million after the Reds triggered his release clause. His arrival follows the signing of Brighton 's Alexis Mac Allister last month, making it two new midfielders this summer for Liverpool manager Klopp.

Now it's time for the Reds to search elsewhere for recruits and Carragher has already pointed his former club in one direction, having predicted the two midfield acquisitions. Speaking towards the end of Liverpool's below-par 2022-23 campaign, the ex-Anfield stalwart declared on Sky Sports : "I think they need another midfield player at least.

"I think Liverpool will end up getting another two midfield players and I think they'll need another defender as well. Whether that's a centre-back or a full-back remains to be seen. There's a lot of talk whether Liverpool will keep the system they finished the season with and that's really interesting, but I think they'll get another three players in."

So, according to Carragher, a defender should be what Klopp and co are looking for now that Szoboszlai is signed, sealed and delivered. With Trent Alexander-Arnold exploring midfield role at the back end of last term, the prospect of a new right-back has been mooted by fans - and in the boardroom.

With youngster Calvin Ramsay loaned out to Preston North End for the new season, only Joe Gomez can provide cover for Alexander-Arnold. James Milner used to slot in there when required, but the long-serving Red has joined Brighton after eight years on Merseyside.

According to the Times, Liverpool have drawn up a shortlist of defenders who they'd like to sign. Top of it is another Leipzig player, centre-back Josko Gvardiol, who's been the subject of a world-record bid from Manchester City, Sky Germany claim.

Torino's Per Schuurs is another rising star admired by Klopp, having left Ajax last summer. Following an impressive first campaign with the Italian side, the Dutchman now commands a fee of around £25m.

Then comes Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, who've also been linked with Schuurs in the event that their highly-rated captain departs. England international Guehi is also liked by Arsenal, meaning that he'd cost a pretty penny in any pursuit.

The shortlist also includes Ajax's own Jurrien Timber, who can notably play as a centre-back or right-back. However, the Netherlands international is edging closer to a £45m move to Arsenal, who Liverpool will hope to compete with at the summit of the Premier League next season.
