Jamie Carragher questions decision not to send off Trippier for tackle against Man City

Jamie Carragher has questioned the decision not to send Kieran Trippier off for Newcastle after the player's knee-high challenge on Kevin de Bruyne during Manchester City's 3-3 draw at St. James' Park.

City's perfect start to the Premier League season hit a slight speed bump as Pep Guardiola's side failed to make it three wins in-a-row. It was an end-to-end game that saw City take the lead after just five minutes thanks to yet another goal from Ilkay Gundogan.

However, the Blues' domination did not last for long as they then conceded the next three goals, trailing 3-1 with just over half-an-hour to play. Erling Haaland started the rescue mission as he scored on the hour mark, before Bernardo Silva made it 3-3 only four minutes after the Norwegian netted his third goal in as many games this season.

One of the controversial talking points during the match came in the 72nd minute when Trippier was shown a straight red card for a knee-high tackle on De Bruyne. The midfielder was unhurt by the challenge and immediately got up to shove Trippier in anger.

Moments later however, referee Jarred Gillett was sent to the monitor as VAR instructed the official to have a look at the challenge again. Subsequently, the decision was reversed as the red card was rescinded, with the Newcastle defender receiving a yellow card instead.

This sparked outrage among the City fans and even on the pitch as Joao Cancelo pleaded with Gillett to change his mind, pointing to his knee to show the referee just how high the challenge was. Cancelo was not the only one bemused by the decision as Carragher took to social media to question the outcome.

The former Liverpool player tweeted: "That Trippier tackle is going to be a red in the future.

"It's not a leg breaker, but why should a player be able to take someone out at knee height with no intention of winning the ball?? #NEWMCI "

The decision could have seen City play the final 15 minutes against 10-men as Guardiola's side searched for a late-winner. However, the result saw the two teams share a point each as the Blues remain unbeaten, despite their perfect start coming to an end.
