Jamie Carragher hits out at Mohamed Salah penalty 'madness' after Senegal beat Egypt

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Egypt's decision to select Mohamed Salah as their last penalty taker in their African Cup of Nations final defeat to Senegal.

Sadio Mane missed the game’s best chance after his early penalty was saved by Mohamed Abou Gabal after Salah appeared to tell the Pharaohs stopper which way to dive.

The contest finished goalless after 90 minutes and extra time, and was settled via spot kicks.

However, the Egyptians missed two of their four penalties and Senegal put away four of their five to seal victory.

Mane atoned for an earlier miss by scoring the decisive spot kick, but Carragher took to social media to criticise Egypt’s decision not to position Salah higher in their order of penalties.

“That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth. Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain.” He tweeted .

"[it''s] someone who the manager thinks can handle pressure moments. I’m interested in if it’s the manager's decision or the player's."

"Another thing that’s stupid in shootouts, teams who win the toss and let the opposition take the first penalty."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be delighted that the tournament is over and that his star forwards have come through it unscathed.

Both Salah and Mane could be available for Reds' home clash with Leicester City on 10 February.
