Jamie Carragher gives Man City opinion as Arsenal fan Piers Morgan calls for 'points deduction'

Piers Morgan has called for action to be taken against Manchester City after it was revealed that the Premier League champions have been charged with numerous breaches of financial rules following a four-year investigation.

The statement from the league reads: "In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4."

Meanwhile City themselves have responded, writing: "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with."

Given that City are the Gunners' closest challengers for the title this season there is intrigue into just how and when Guardiola's men could be punished. Martyn Ziegler of the Times writes that a points deduction is possible whilst expulsion from the league is also on the cards in a worst case scenario.

Although any punishment is unlikely to be retrospective and City aren't expected to be stripped of any of their four titles in the past six years, Arsenal fan Morgan is more concerned with the current season. He tweeted in response to the breaking news: "Outrageous. Immediate points deduction!"

Arsenal are already five points ahead of City with a game in hand despite losing for just the second time this season against Everton on Saturday. Some fans have already made their position clear that competing against Guardiola's men without a points deduction would be more satisfying than having their nearest competition heavily sanctioned. Juventus have already fallen foul to a 15 point deduction this season, knocking them out of a possible title charge.

Whilst Morgan set his stall out early Jamie Carragher offered his view. "This can’t be right," he tweeted in regards to the news. "Man City bring in more commercial revenue than Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Man Utd & Liverpool (person shrugging emoji.)"

This is now a story set to rumble on with City themselves open to a review of the process, though it is reported that under current rules the decision wouldn't be able to be appealed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS.)
