Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher branded Richard Keys a 'sad desperate man' as the two broadcasters exchanged blows on social media over their views on the England manager's job.
Gareth Southgate's future as Three Lions boss has been called into question following the national team's elimination from the Qatar World Cup at the hands of France in the quarter-finals. Southgate has two years remaining on his current contract but is understood to be 'weighing up his future' after the agonising tournament exit on Saturday evening.
Speculation has grown as to who could replace him as England boss if he decides to throw the towel in, with Eddie Howe emerging as an early favourite alongside household names including Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel.

But Carragher caused some debate on Twitter when he shared his view that the England manager should always be English themselves, ruling out the case for the former Tottenham and Chelsea bosses. His thoughts on the matter were also published in an article for the Mail.
Carragher Tweeted: "The @England manager should always be English!"
Former Sky Sports presenter Keys, who now anchors beIN Sports' football coverage, rejected Carragher's view emphatically and launched a stinging attack on Twitter.
Carragher retweeted the view of Keys before delivering a public response an hour later. He Tweeted: “I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of journalist who have the same opinion, or is it because I work for Sky! You are a sad desperate man @richardajkeys Ps love the blogs."
Pochettino is currently the bookies' favourite to be the new man in the hot seat at 4/1 with Sky Bet, followed by Tuchel and Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers. Howe is currently 10/1 to replace Gareth Southgate, but the England boss is yet to make a firm decision on his future.
