Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney disagree over Premier League Hall of Fame shortlists

Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney could only agree on three players as they selected the next six Premier League icons who should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Top-flight chiefs unveiled the Hall of Fame last year as Newcastle hero Alan Shearer and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry became its first two members. A further eight former players have also been inducted with Manchester United hero Rooney and former Gunners captain Patrick Vieira the latest two additions.

Six more members will soon be announced, with Carragher and Rooney picking out those they think are most deserving of an esteemed spot in the Hall of Fame. However, they could only agree on three of their selections while speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

The duo were on the same page regarding Paul Scholes, John Terry and Sergio Aguero, who scored the most dramatic goal in Premier League history to snatch the title in 2012. "I went for Sergio Aguero, who I think has given us the best moment in the Premier League with that goal," Carragher said. "I then went with John Terry, who I've said for years is, in my opinion, the best centre-back in Premier League history. Paul Scholes, one of the absolute greats in midfield."

Rooney agreed with these three selections and even argued that United favourite Scholes should have been one of the first two players inducted. "The ones which are the same are Sergio Aguero, one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen," Rooney said. "Paul Scholes, in my opinion, it should have been him and Alan Shearer, the first two." England's record goalscorer then added: "I went with John Terry also. Horrible to play against, dominant for so many years in the Premier League."

This was the extent of Rooney and Carragher's consensus, with the latter picking Peter Schmeichel, Yaya Toure and Robbie Fowler. He added: "Peter Schmeichel. I'm going to go for Yaya Toure, who I think in that Manchester City team was absolutely unbelievable. It was men against boys at times when he was coming through. The last one, I thought: 'I've got to put god in, how can you not put god in?' Robbie Fowler."

In contrast, Rooney rounded off his six-man shortlist with Ian Wright, Vincent Kompany and Ashley Cole. He said: "I went for Ian Wright. Growing up, I used to hate watching him play against Everton because he'd always score. He was a character, he had a cheekiness about him. I also went for Vincent Kompany. I think I had so many battles against Kompany throughout the years. I enjoyed the challenge of playing against him. The last one I went for was Ashley Cole. For big periods of his career, he was the best left-back in the world."
