Jamie Carragher and Dermot Gallagher split on Nick Pope and Raul Jimenez incident

Jamie Carragher believes Nick Pope should've been sent off for a challenge on Raul Jimenez during Newcastle United's 2-1 victory over Wolves on Sunday.

Pope miscontrolled the ball, which prompted Jimenez to pounce and close him down. The Mexican international then went down once he met the ball, but referee Andy Madeley overlooked Wolves' claims for a penalty along with the VAR officials.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher claimed on social media that sticking with the on-field decision was a 'mistake'.

Carragher tweeted: "Nick Pope should’ve been sent off and Wolves awarded a penalty at Newcastle. The directive from Howard Webb to try and stick with on field decisions as much as possible was a mistake today. The referee was so far away there was no way he knew what had happened."

Although former referee Dermot Gallagher was convinced that Pope fouled Jimenez, he believes whether the England international should've seen a red card or not is up for debate.

"I think it's a foul," Gallagher told Ref Watch on Sky Sports News. "I've heard other people say they don't think it's a foul but for me Pope misjudges the ball there.

"Jimenez nicks the ball off him, and once he nicks the ball off him, I think Pope leans into him, and all he's going to do is try and impede him. He does and I think it's a penalty. The argument then is where is the ball, where's his travel going to go but what I will say is it's a penalty. Whether it's a red card is up for debate.

"Andy Madeley has made it quite clear on the field, he doesn't think it's a foul, that's his choice. If he relays to the VAR what he's seen and he feels that Jimenez has gone into Pope rather than the other way round, then the VAR will have to decide is it a clear and obvious error, and didn't.
