James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly showed their marriage truly reflects “till death do us part.”

In an emotional interview with People, Kimberly revealed that she and the actor quietly renewed their wedding vows from their bedroom bed just days before he died. It was not a grand event or a planned celebration. Instead, it was a deeply personal moment shared with only a small circle of loved ones.

Kimberly said the decision came together quickly, but friends and family stepped in to make it special. “We decided two days beforehand and our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed,” Kimberly told the outlet.

She described the moment as private, meaningful, and filled with love, saying the ceremony was “simple and beautiful and moving.”

Only a few close family members and friends were present in person, but others still found a way to be there. Some joined the ceremony through Zoom, creating a mix of in-person and virtual support around the couple.

Kimberly also shared that one friend played what she called the “most beautiful music” during the renewal. The ceremony ended with a song many people associate with comfort and hope, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

The couple originally married in 2010 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Over the years, they built a large family together and welcomed six children.

The vow renewal came shortly before the heartbreaking announcement Kimberly made on February 11, when she confirmed James had passed away at age 48. His death came one year after he publicly shared his colon cancer diagnosis.

In her post, Kimberly wrote, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
