Rangers are interested in signing James Trafford from Manchester City according to a report.
The goalkeeper has impressed on loan at Bolton Wanderers this season keeping ten clean sheets to help propel the Trotters into the English League One playoff positions. The Daily Mail reports that Trafford’s performances have caught Michael Beale’s eye, and that the Ibrox club could make a move to sign Trafford when the transfer window opens next month.
The goalkeeping situation at Ibrox will need attention at the end of the season. Allan McGregor looks likely to retire after finally deciding to stay on for one more year last summer. Jon McLaughlin is the established second choice but doubts remain over whether he will automatically inherit the No 1 shirt. Third choice Robby McCrorie has had to remain patient and head out on loan. He signed a new deal in October, keeping him at Ibrox until 2025. But should another, younger stopper be signed in Trafford, then the Scotland call-up may seek to play regular first team football elsewhere.
A deal for Trafford at this stage of the season would ore likely be a loan, although could include an option to buy. His first team chances at the Etihad are likely to be limited for the foreseeable future, with Ederson, veteran Scott Carson, Zach Steffen and Stefan Ortega Moreno all ahead of him in the pecking order under Pep Guardiola.
Whether he would swap regular game time at Bolton to move to Ibrox at this stage of the season remains to be seen. But his long term prospects of playing at Ibrox would be greater than if he remains with the English champions, and could make a summer move more appealing.
