James McClean helps Wigan to Crewe victory with goal and assist

James McClean helped Wigan move within six points of Sky Bet League One leaders Rotherham after a 2-0 win at home to struggling Crewe on Tuesday night.

After a goalless first half at the DW Stadium, it was summer arrival McClean who helped make the opener when his cross was headed in by Callum Lang in the 57th minute.

Republic of Ireland international McClean, 32, then wrapped up the points late on with a deflected second to ensure the Latics stay on the heels of the Millers with two games in hand while third-place MK Dons are now five points adrift.

At the other end of the table, Doncaster moved off the bottom and above Crewe into 23rd place with a 1-0 win at Lincoln, where play was held up due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

Midway through the second half, an individual in the crowd required treatment but after they were able to regain consciousness, the fixture resumed following a 10-minute delay.

It was Rovers who were able to celebrate at full-time after Dan Gardner’s 75th-minute penalty earned a narrow victory while Lincoln saw Joe Walsh sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

Burton burst the bubble of in-form Bolton with three goals in 18 minutes to clinch a 3-1 win.

After Joe Powell had opened the scoring in the 11th minute, John Brayford hit a quickfire double to leave Ian Evatt’s side reeling despite entering this fixture after six wins from their last seven matches.

There was also a second-half delay in this encounter due to a medical emergency in the crowd but once play continued, Burton held strong despite Dion Charles netting a stoppage-time consolation for Wanderers.

In League Two, Exeter needed a dramatic late goal from Jack Sparkes to beat Harrogate in a seven-goal thriller and move into the automatic promotion places.

Town were on course set for an away win after first-half efforts by Luke Armstrong and Jack Muldoon were added to by George Thompson in the 64th minute in Devon.

Jevani Brown had temporarily reduced the deficit for Exeter from the penalty spot after 37 minutes but they needed three goals during the final 19 minutes to turn the contest around.

Goals by Jonathan Grounds and Timothee Dieng saw the Grecians draw level with nine minutes left and Sparkes’ deflected winner sent St James’ Park into pandemonium, with City now up to third.

Second-placed Tranmere suffered a surprise 1-0 loss away to Hartlepool after Peter Clarke put through his own net.

Clarke headed past his own goalkeeper at the end of the first half and it was enough to further dent the title hopes of Rovers, who trail leaders Forest Green by 11 points having played two games more than the pace-setters.

Sutton, another side in the promotion hunt, were left stunned by goals from Bristol Rovers at the start of each half.

Harry Anderson fired Rovers into the lead after four minutes and Aaron Collins doubled their advantage within 60 seconds of the second period.

It earned the hosts a 2-0 victory which could have been more had captain Paul Coutts converted a first-half penalty.

Rovers move up to 11th and are seven points off the play-offs while Sutton stay in fifth but are three points behind Exeter, who occupy the final automatic promotion spot.
