James Corden has revealed that his decision to quit his role as host of The Late Late Show was a 'really hard' one to make, but something that has left him 'really excited' for the future.
The 43-year old made the surprising announcement in an episode that aired on April 28. The star will leave the role in 2023, eight years after taking over from predecessor Craig Ferguson.
There will undoubtedly be numerous opportunities for the star, who as well as a television host, is also an acclaimed actor, comedian, singer, writer and producer.
"I just sort of felt like maybe we'd done enough? Maybe we'd done everything we wanted to do," he explained to ET 's Nischelle Turner at an event in Hollywood.
"When I took the job, firstly, I didn't think we'd be on the air, like, six months later. Then as soon as it seemed like we'd be on for a little while, I was very very determined that the show wouldn't over stay it's welcome in any way and that we would always know when to leave. That we'd always know when to go out on top, because I think that's really important."
Corden who rose to fame in the television series Fat Friends before co-staring in his own BBC Three sitcom, Gavin & Stacey, gained popularity across the pond particularly through his show's Carpool Karaoke segment, which has featured the likes of Adele, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Britney Spears.
Adding that he's 'really excited' about what the future may hold, the London-born all-rounder said he had had the best time of his life hosting the show.
He went on to reveal his pride in being able to go out on his own terms, with his stock still high.
"Whoever gets to decide? Certainly not in this industry. Who ever gets to make their own decisions? Never. And you'll never find out [what is waiting for you] unless you just take a run and jump," he added.
"It was really hard, and, you know, there is family decisions and all the things like that," he added.
"But I just couldn't shake that, maybe if I try and back myself somehow. There might be one more adventure, there might be one more journey that I might be capable of. I will never find out if I stay in the safety of this, you know?"
The star added that he still has one wish to fulfil before he leaves, and that's to see Beyonce appear on the show.
"I think it's up to her. I don't think anybody tells Beyonce what to do," he joked.
"But if she's watching, she knows where to find us. It would be amazing to do it. I'm certain it would be really good. I know it would, so we will see."
Reacting to the news of Corden's impending departure, meanwhile, CBS president and CEO George Cheeks said in a statement: "In my two years at CBS, I've had the privilege to see James’ creative genius up close and experience his valuable partnership with CBS, both as a performer and a producer.
"We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on The Late Late Show."
