James Bond game from IO Interactive to feature young Bond and may begin epic trilogy

The next James Bond game will feature a younger take on the character — and is planned to be part of an epic trilogy —the developer’s CEO Hakan Abrak has said.

IO Interactive head Abrak spoke about the upcoming game in an interview with IGN, suggesting this won’t be a one-off title.

“It's not a gamification of a movie. It's completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future,” he said.

IO Interactive is no stranger to trilogies. The series that earned the company the right to develop for James Bond, Hitman, rolled as three separate titles from 2016 to 2021. They were encapsulated in the epic Hitman: World of Assassination in 2023.

We will not be treated to any likenesses of Daniel Craig either. “It's a new Bond. It's a Bond we built from ground up for gamers,” Abrak said.

The game James Bond will reportedly not resemble Daniel Craig, who played the British secret agent between 2006 and 2021 (MGM)

While a new movie Bond is expected to be announced, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson the frontrunner, it sounds like the game will have its version of the secret agent.

IO Interactive announced its James Bond venture in November 2020, dubbed Project 007.

This raised hopes for the series, which — aside from the 2023 remaster of Goldeneye for modern platforms — hasn’t seen a major console release since 2012’s all-but-forgotten 007 Legends.

IO Interactive’s work on the Hitman games has often attracted comparisons to James Bond. Those titles put you in large, semi-open environments and offer many ways to complete your mission. That might be anything from dressing up as a chef and poisoning the soup of your target to walking up to them with a gun raised.

The final in the series, Hitman 3, won the Golden Joysticks PC Game of the Year award in 2021.

No release date has been announced for IO Interactive’s take on James Bond, but it is not expected to arrive before 2026.

The developer is also working on an “online fantasy RPG” called Project Fantasy.
