This is tough to watch. The New Orleans Saints pulled some starters late in their blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, with Jameis Winston taking over from Derek Carr to close out the game — at least that was the plan. Winston was immediately intercepted on a shot downfield to help seal the 26-9 loss. Defensive back Dee Delaney drove down on an underthrown ball sent to a sliding Chris Olave, which he picked off and returned near midfield.
It was a fitting end to an ugly game, and it kind of brought things full-circle with Winston being Tampa Bay’s old quarterback. But these are who these teams are at this point. The Saints field a weak offense that’s lost more turnovers (5) than scored touchdowns (4). The Buccaneers have a well-coached defense that’s drafted and developed a lot of talented players even far down the depth chart. They deserve just as much credit for winning this game as the Saints deserve criticism for botching it.
