Jamal Adams out Week 1 vs. Rams, Devon Witherspoon also unlikely to play

The Seattle Seahawks are likely to be without two of their top defensive backs in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. Pete Carroll told reporters on Friday that Jamal Adams has been ruled out as he continues to recover from a quad injury suffered last year. Additionally, cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who was the fifth overall pick in the draft this year, is also unlikely to play.

Witherspoon has been dealing with a hamstring injury and may not be ready for the season opener next Sunday. That’s a pretty big blow to the Seahawks secondary, though Tariq Woolen and Quandre Diggs are both still there and healthy.

Adams has had a tough time in Seattle since being acquired in 2020. He’s played just 25 games in three years, missing all but one game last season. When healthy, he’s a playmaker on defense but it’s been difficult for him to stay on the field.

Witherspoon was projected to be one of the starting cornerbacks after he was selected fifth overall but as we’ve seen with Cooper Kupp, hamstring injuries are tricky and the team isn’t going to rush him back.
