Jamaica manager Lorne Donaldson speaks to ITV. “I tell you what, this is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in my life! To see these girls, to see a country like Jamaica, to be able to do this, is unbelievable to just watch it while I am alive, right here, standing. I thank the girls to do this for their country, and the country should be proud. The resilience! The fight! We know it’s a war and we have to be ready. We stayed in the battle and we won the war. We have some more work to do but we’ll enjoy tonight. I did a cartwheel [Donaldson had promised to do one if Jamaica got through] but I don’t know if it was a good one. I can’t do two cartwheels, I might hurt myself! A cup of beer and I’m good, I’m not a big drinker. I will enjoy it!”
We can exclusively report that Donaldson executed a perfectly serviceable roly-poly … and also that Panama are currently cavorting in delight to celebrate their three-goal haul against France, as well as their first appearance at a finals. Party time in Jamaica, Panama and France, then. Cups of beer all round … with another raised to commiserate with Brazil, of course. They played their part and came up short, but their time will come.
A reminder: Jamaica had to crowdfund their trip to this World Cup. This is one of the truly great World Cup stories. What a team! Having seen off one of the giants of the world game, they huddle round on the pitch, listen to a motivational/celebratory speech from their captain Bunny Shaw, then start bouncing around in the delighted fashion. Incidentally, the other match in Group F ended 6-3 to France, Panama exiting the tournament with some spirit-restoring panache of their own. Fair to say Group F has delivered its fair share of drama and entertainment!

Jamaica held the world number five team France last week. Now they’ve held the world number eight side. Brazil, one of the pre-tournament favourites, have been knocked out. Their long wait for an elusive World Cup goes on! More pertinently, Jamaica are through to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time. Three matches, three losses four years ago, and now look! They throughly deserve to go through, as well. Yes, they had to defend … oh they had to defend all right. Rebecca Spencer in the Jamaica goal was exceptional. And yet Bunny Shaw and Solai Washington could have snatched a win at the end, too, and such a result wouldn’t have flattered Jamaica, who have yet to concede at this World Cup. They’ll most likely face Colombia in the Round of 16. The Colombians won’t fancy the prospect one bit.

90 min +4: The corner leads to a melee in the six-yard box! The ball loops up near Debinha, who can get a header away! The ball flies towards the top left … but there’s no power behind the header. Spencer claims. That’s surely it!
90 min +3: Washington dribbles down the inside-left channel. She reaches the box. She’s got Shaw free in the middle, but opts to shoot instead. Blocked. And could it be costly? Because Brazil break and Geyse wins a corner down the right!
90 min +2: Andressa drives down the inside-left channel but Chantelle Swaby comes across to take control and shepherd the ball out of play. Goal kick. Jamaica so close now!
90 min +1: Washington works her way down the left. She goes nowhere fast, but the clock is her friend.
90 min: Andressa curls weakly towards the top right. Spencer claims. Justice is done. There will be four minutes of added time. Jamaica four minutes away from a first-ever appearance in the knockout stage. Brazil four minutes away from failing to get out of the groups for the first time since 1995.
89 min: Kerolin dribbles in from the right and kicks her own heel. She falls over. Washington, just behind her, is adjudged to have clipped the Brazilian, despite not touching her. It’s a free kick. It shouldn’t be, but it is. Andressa to take.
88 min: Spencer claims a long pass and drops to the floor, allowing the clock to do its thing. We’d all do it in her position, and Jamaica have earned the right.
86 min: Debinha zips down the left flank and cuts infield before hitting a low shot-cum-cross towards the near stick. Spencer, whose handling with one exception has been impeccable, gathers without fuss. “The Jamaican defenders look much more relaxed than anyone should holding on to a 0-0 against Brazil at a World Cup,” writes Kári Tulinius. “The Canarinhas need to unsettle the Reggae Girlz somehow, but I don’t know if they’ve got the player to do so. If only they had a rested Marta to bring on now.”
85 min: A Jamaican change: Washington comes on for Brown.
84 min: Debinha curls in from the left. Geyse can’t quite latch onto the cross at the far stick. Bia Zaneratto whips it back in. Spencer claims. The atmosphere is electric, the entire stadium on edge. This game has suddenly burst into life, crackling with nervous energy.
82 min: Two huge hearts-in-mouths moments for Brazil, as Shaw first goes over Tamires’s leg in the box – no penalty – then powers down the middle only to blooter over from 20 yards with only Leticia to beat! Brazil teetering on the edge here.
80 min: Brazil make a triple sub. Marta, Antonia and Luana are replaced by Andressa, Geyse and Duda Sampaio.

79 min: Luana crosses low from the left. Allyson Swaby, facing away from her own goal on the left-hand corner of the six-yard box, slices backwards horribly and nearly loops into the top right. Spencer grabs desperately.
78 min: Brazil can’t get anything going.
76 min: Jamaica suddenly find a little something and push Brazil back. Cameron and Wiltshire keep hold of the ball down the right flank and the clock ticks on. Calm and clever.
74 min: The nerves really are jangling C86 style now. Two-pass moves at a premium.
72 min: Allyson Swaby clumsily clanks a simple backpass out of play for a corner. Blackwood gets her team-mate out of an embarrassing hole by clearing the set piece.
70 min: Shaw slides in on Luana and whips the ball away cleanly. But she’s penalised for it, and receives a talking-to from the referee as well. But nothing comes of the resulting free kick, swung harmlessly into a crowded mixer. Brazil are seriously short of ideas.
68 min: The goals keep on coming in the other match. Yet another penalty, but this one’s for Panama, and Yomira Pinzon slams it home. It’s 5-2 to France.
67 min: Bia Zaneratto chases after a long ball. She nearly nicks it away from a snoozing Wiltshire, but the Jamaica defender gets the benefit of a lucky ricochet and the ball sails out for a goal kick. Bia Zaneratto has looked lively since coming on.
66 min: Chantelle Swaby heads the corner clear, but the ball ends up with Marta out on the left. Marta has more time than she realises, and her rushed low cross is cleared by Shaw, who is putting in a shift at both ends.
65 min: The corner’s hit long. Some chaos at the far stick. Allyson Swaby is forced to hack out under pressure from Bia Zaneratto. A corner coming in from the left this time.
64 min: A lull, which suits Jamaica down to the ground. But then Antonia makes a run down the right to force Allyson Swaby into the concession of a corner.
62 min: A sense that nerves are beginning to kick in now. A lot of loose, rushed passes. So much at stake. Brazil are desperate for the goal that would avert an early exit; Jamaica are half-an-hour away from making history.
60 min: Ah yes, Shaw is moving much more easily now.
59 min: Shaw comes back on but doesn’t look particularly comfortable right now. Here’s hoping Jamaica’s star player can run that off.
58 min: Shaw has been in the wars already today, and now she suffers a whack in competition with Rafaelle. A dead leg. She limps off to receive some treatment.

57 min: Another penalty for Kadidiatou Diani in the other game, and France lead Panama 5-1. That’s a hat-trick for Diani. It’s fairly safe to say France are through as group winners.
56 min: Shaw bustles down the right and does extremely well to keep a long pass in play, but she’s got nobody with her in support and eventually Brazil win the ball back. Shaw looks a proper handful every time she romps forward.
54 min: Kerolin loops a high cross in from the right. Spencer rises highest but lets the ball squirt through her hands in the bar-of-soap style. It nearly drops at the feet of Debinha, but the keeper recovers her poise quickly and smothers the ball like a blanket. So close to a disastrous mistake. Hearts in Jamaican mouths for a split second there.
52 min: Antonia crosses from the right. Bia Zaneratto can’t guide a header goalwards. Adriana crosses from the left. Kerolin can’t get a shot away from the edge of the box. Brazil have turned up the heat all right, but the final ball is lacking.

50 min: Cameron’s long pass down the right nearly releases Shaw through on goal. Kathellen sticks to Shaw’s shoulder, though, then barges it hard, shoving the striker out wide and eventually putting an end to the break. That’s outrageously good one-on-one defending. A goal for Jamaica now and Brazil would have the proverbial mountain to get up and over.
49 min: Bia Zaneratto gets involved again, jigging down the left to win another corner. The sub looks lively. Debinha swings the set piece into the mixer. A brief brouhaha before Jamaica clear their lines. Brazil have clearly been in receipt of the half-time what-for.
47 min: Brazil need a goal and they’re on the front foot early doors in this second half. Debinha and Adriana combine swiftly down the left to win a corner … but Brazil waste it, Bia Zaneratto and Kerolin combining short and getting themselves caught offside.
Jamaica get the ball rolling for the second half. They’ve swapped Matthews for Cameron, while Brazil have replaced Ary Borges with Bia Zaneratto.
Incidentally, the half-time score in the other game is Panama 1-4 France. Lea Le Garrec increased the French lead just before the break. Daniel Harris has all the details.

HALF TIME: Jamaica 0-0 Brazil
As things stand, Jamaica are going through with France. The south American champions will be going home.
45 min +2: It’s all Brazil in terms of territory and possession, and yet Jamaica continue to look assured. Debinha drops deep to quarterback, and looks long for Kerolin. Easy for Spencer. Then it’s Tamires’s turn to launch a long ball. Debinha is shepherded out of the way by Chantelle Swaby and Spencer claims again. Brazil need to chat about some fresh ideas during the half-time break.
45 min: Luana finds a pocket of space just to the right of the Jamaica D. She chips softly towards the far post, where Wiltshere clears. Too easy for Jamaica. There will be three added first-half minutes.
43 min: Debinha makes ground down the right and cuts back for Marta, who can’t find the in-rushing Ary Borges with a cushioned pass. Spencer eventually gathers possession. Jamaica will be pleased with the way this match is going right now. They’re looking solid while Brazil are pretty blunt.
41 min: Allyson Swaby and Marta collide on the halfway line. It looks like an innocent, accidental collision but Brazil get the decision. Debinha wants Swaby booked, claiming an elbow in the mouth, but the referee quite correctly isn’t interested in that nonsense.
39 min: Brazil have suddenly moved up a couple of gears. There’s some penalty-box bagatelle in the Jamaican box. Half cleared. Then Ary Borges wedges a delightful pass down the inside-left channel to release Tamires, whose first-time swipe is only just gathered at the near post by Spencer.
37 min: Marta and Debinha link up yet again down the inside-left channel … and once more the Jamaican door slams shut. Meanwhile in the other match, a Kadidiatou Diani penalty makes it 3-1 to France against Panama.
36 min: Spence shimmies elegantly to break into space down the inside-right channel. She rolls a pass towards Matthews on her right. Matthews thinks about pearling a shot goalwards … and probably should have done, because the eventual low cross she delivers is aimless and hacked clear by Brazil. That was a very promising position for Jamaica.
34 min: It’s all pretty shapeless at the moment. Jamaica, who still haven’t conceded at this World Cup, will be perfectly content with this state of affairs.
32 min: Mary Waltz had it right with her initial hunch: France have turned it around against Panama in short order. Kadidiatou Diani puts Les Bleues 2-1 up and in control of the group. For now, at least.

30 min: Matthews is booked for stopping a quick Brazilian throw in midfield. Pretty daft with Brazil going nowhere in particular.
28 min: Antonia floats a cross in from the right wing. Easy pickings for Spencer. Brazil are dominant in terms of possession, with 63 percent compared to Jamaica’s 23, but they’re doing very little with it in the final third.
26 min: Shaw’s mere presence down the left panics Rafaelle into the concession of a corner. Or does it? Ah no, there was a foul during the build-up. Neither keeper has been pressed into serious action yet.
24 min: Brazil are getting plenty of joy down the left. Luana is the latest to make good down that flank. She stands one up for Ary Borges, who should at the very least hit the target with a header from eight yards, but only heads harmlessly over the bar.
23 min: … and with immaculate timing, France level against Panama. Maelle Lakrar with the equaliser. Or was it an own goal? Either way, Brazil need to win again.

22 min: A slight lull, so here’s more from Mary Waltz. “This year’s World Cup has proven so far that anything can happen. I would like to say of course France will brush Panama off their shoulders and show their class but I have given up on predictions because all of mine have been proven wrong. Amazing.”
20 min: Some pinball on the edge of the Jamaican box. Suddenly the ball breaks to Tamires on the left, and a route into the area opens up. She strides forward but doesn’t make great contact with her low drive, and it’s snaffled by Spencer.
18 min: Shaw, who had hurt herself by kicking Antonia’s boot, is thankfully good to continue.
17 min: Shaw drives infield from the right, then comes off second best in a 50-50 block with Antonia. Shaw crumples in some pain. On come the physios.
16 min: Tamires crosses from the left. Luana loops a harmless header straight at Spencer.

15 min: … so having said that, Jamaica string together a few passes in Brazilian territory for the first time. A little space for Chantelle Swaby down the left. A dangerous looking low cross only just flies behind Shaw, bombing in from the other side. Matthews races off to retrieve the loose ball, and overpowers Adriana, but the Brazilian goes down cheaply and wins a very cheap free kick. The pressure on Brazil is released.
13 min: Adriana skitters down the left touchline at high speed. It’s an electrifying run, all the way to the byline, but the final cutback disappoints. She soon comes again, though, belting a shot straight down Spencer’s throat from distance. Brazil are slowly beginning to get on top.
11 min: Debinha and Marta combine again down the left. The former cuts back for the latter, and the resulting scuffed shot is blocked by Sampson and gathered by Spencer. Speaking of Brazil’s living legend, here’s Mary Waltz: “The fact that Marta has never won a World Cup for Brazil just proves that football is a team sport, it requires a team effort no matter how amazing an individual is. I am old and I was able to watch Marta over decades and in her prime she was as good or better than anyone in the game. Won or lose, her legend is intact.”
9 min: Spence takes disproportionate umbrage at the award of a garden-variety free kick in the middle of the park. The referee gives her a long talking-to, but things go no further. It would have been utterly pointless to pick up a booking there, over what was basically nowt.
7 min: Seconds before that move, Shaw embarked on her first run of the evening down the right. For a moment, it looked as though things were going to open up for the Jamaican captain, but Rafaelle wasn’t having any of it and shut the door quickly.
5 min: Debinha and Marta nearly open Jamaica up with a combination down the inside-left channel. The ball dribbles through to Spencer in the Jamaican goal, and play continues, even though Allyson Swaby had a small handful of Debinha’s shirt there, tugging her back gently. You know what, you’ve seen them given. Swaby taking one heck of a chance.
3 min: Panama have taken a shock lead against France! Marta Cox whistles a free kick into the top-left corner from distance, and all of a sudden Brazil qualify as things stand.

2 min: A slightly nervous clearing header by Blackwood allows Brazil to press forward. Blackwood then slices weakly at a clearance, and is fortunate Brazil fail to take any sort of advantage from the edge of the box. Time for Blackwood to take a deep breath and settle.

The teams are out! Both countries usually sport yellow but only one can do so this evening, and it’s Jamaica who get dibs on their first-choice colours. Brazil play in second-choice blue, which is almost as iconic a colour palette for the Seleçāo at World Cups, no? Time for the anthems: Jamaica’s stately and serene, Brazil’s a rousing rumble. The first round of fixtures saw Jamaica hold France to a goalless draw, while Brazil were busy scoring one of the goals of the tournament in a 4-0 rout of Panama.

The biggest names are back for the decisive showdown. Brazil start with Marta for the first time in this tournament, while Jamaica captain Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw returns from suspension. Marta replaces Geyse up front for Brazil, while Kathellen takes Lauren’s place in defence.
Shaw is one of three changes to the Jamaican starting XI from the 1-0 win over Panama. Tiernny Wiltshire replaces Tiffany Cameron at the back, while Cheyna Matthews lines up alongside Shaw up front. Trudi Carter and Kayla McKenna are the attackers who make way.

Preamble
Marta was the best player in the world for a while back there – she won the Fifa World Player of the Year award six times between 2006 and 2018 – and you’d not get an argument from too many people if you suggested she’s the greatest there ever has been. Yet there’s one huge gap on her otherwise stellar resumé. This is the last chance for her to fill it with that elusive World Cup … but it’s a bid that could end heartbreakingly early should Brazil fail to beat Jamaica in Melbourne this evening.
The Seleçāo saw off Jamaica 3-0 four years ago in France. That match was the Reggae Girlz’ first-ever game at a finals, and they went on to suffer further hidings at the hands of Italy (0-5) and Australia (1-4), but they’re a vastly different proposition this time, having already held the French team that went on to deservedly beat Brazil last weekend. So there’s no reason why they can’t get the draw they need to progress, captain and talisman, especially as their star striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw returns from suspension, having been sent off against France.
“We don’t want to go home,” says Marta, who if she scores, will become the first player, female or male, to do so at six World Cup finals. But then neither do Jamaica, and with Marta most likely to be utilised as a supersub, much will depend on Debinha to replicate the excellent performance she delivered in defeat last weekend. Everything to play for here, then, with France expected to see off Panama in the other match and secure top spot in Group F. Kick off at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is at 8pm local time, 7am in Brazil, 5am in Jamaica, and 11am BST. It’s on!
