Jamaal Lascelles tipped for ‘fitting’ Nottingham Forest transfer as Newcastle fans wade in

Jamaal Lascelles has been linked with a Nottingham Forest homecoming after falling out of favour at Newcastle United.

The Saudi-backed Magpies are set to overhaul their squad in the summer, with several long-serving players likely to depart St James’ Park. Jonjo Shelvey has already left Newcastle for the City Ground and he could be followed by Lascelles. According to reports in the north-east, the Magpies are prepared to listen to offers for Lascelles, who has made just eight appearances in league and cup this season. That is said to have alerted the Reds and Wolves.

Lascelles has spent eight years on Tyneside since leaving the Reds and has become a popular player with the Toon Army. While most fans believe it is time for the 29-year-old to move on to pastures new, they would be sad to see him go.

One Newcastle fan summed up the mood on social media, tweeting: “Brilliant servant. Stepped up and spoke out when many other ‘senior pros’ didn't. Would go with nothing but thanks from all real NUFC supporters.”

Another said: “If this was 12 months ago, I would've said no. But given he's not a high profile player for us any more, might be ideal now to move him on.”

A third posted: “I love Lascelles but sadly he’s not progressed since Benitez left. A return to Forest would be a fitting move for him.”

One grateful supporter said: “Shelvey and Lascelles (potentially) leaving with respect, appreciation and class from both sides. Very proud.”

Another added: “He's been a good servant for the club, but he must go. For the greater good.”

A few fans insisted he should stay put, with one writing: “I wouldn’t sell him. He’s a good squad player. He’s a big part of the dressing room and has done a good job every time he’s come on this season.”

Others would like to see him involved in some capacity when Newcastle face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final later this month. One said: “Great captain, set us on our way to Wembley with that equaliser at Tranmere. Would love to see him lift that cup on 26th.”
