Jakob Nowell, the son of the late Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell, is carrying on his father's musical legacy. At the recent Coachella music festival, Jakob Nowell joined original Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson on stage, signaling a new chapter for the band.
Bradley Nowell tragically passed away in 1996 at the age of 28 due to an overdose, just before Sublime's self-titled album was released. Following his death, Sublime underwent changes, with Gaugh and Wilson forming the Long Beach Dub Allstars and later Sublime with Rome alongside singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez.
The Coachella performance marked the public debut of the new lineup, with Jakob Nowell impressively channeling his father's vocals on classic hits like 'Bad Fish,' 'Santeria,' and 'What I Got.'
In a recent interview, Jakob Nowell expressed his deep connection to Gaugh and Wilson, referring to them as family. He described the emotional complexity of preparing for his role in the band but also mentioned that it has brought him closure, making the story feel complete.
Sublime rose to fame in the late 1980s with their unique ska-punk and California rock sound. Their 1996 self-titled album, which became a massive hit, solidified their place in music history.
Sublime with Rome is currently on their farewell tour, culminating in a final show in August. However, Jakob Nowell, Gaugh, and Wilson plan to continue performing together at various music festivals and one-off gigs in the future.
