Jaguars place QB Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve

The Jaguars placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence on their injured reserve Wednesday, knocking him out of at least Jacksonville’s next four games as he recovers from a concussion suffered in Week 14 against the Houston Texans.

Lawrence would be eligible to return for Jacksonville’s Week 18 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. That is not considered likely after the Jaguars were mathematically eliminated from 2024-25 postseason play on Monday.

Lawrence returned to play for the Jaguars against the Texans after missing Jacksonville’s previous two games with an AC joint sprain in his left, non-throwing shoulder.

He took an illegal hit from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair as he slid to conclude a six-yard rush in the second quarter on Sunday. Jacksonville and Houston’s benches cleared and brawling ensued as Lawrence was tended to by medical staff, and eventually escorted from the field on a cart.

Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones were penalized and ejected from the game, and Jacksonville tight Evan Engram was also flagged. The NFL suspended Al-Shaair for three games without pay on Tuesday.

Lawrence, who signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension with Jacksonville in June, has completed 172-of-284 passing for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 starts this season. He has added 119 yards and three touchdowns rushing.

Mac Jones will take over as Jacksonville’s starting quarterback with Lawrence sidelined. He has completed 57-of-92 passes for 512 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in five appearances this season.

C.J. Beathard will operate as Jones’ backup moving forward. The Jaguars signed quarterback John Wolford to their practice squad on Tuesday.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated.
