The NFL draft classes in recent history haven’t had a shortage of receivers. This year’s class is no different and fans could see five or six wideouts drafted in the first round following the same trend as the last two drafts. This year’s class should be just as loaded and talented as previous classes, according to some NFL draft experts.
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is among those who like the class, but he doesn’t think the position is as deep as it’s normally been. During the Jags’ draft press conference on Friday, he discussed his thoughts about the wideout class as it’s well known that the Jags could afford to take one early.
“It’s a good group, maybe not as deep as it’s been I think in years past,” Pederson said. “The top of the list is pretty good. There are some guys that have obviously been nicked up coming out of the college season and whatnot.”
He added that there are still receivers who can come in and compete for roster spots while also helping on special teams.
Pederson’s statements about the depth of the receiver class come as the Jags need an X-receiver as they lost DJ Chark Jr. in free agency. Based on what he said, it’s possible the Jags could look at selecting a receiver in the first couple of days or maybe forgo drafting one altogether. Potentially trading up into Round 2 could be on the table but it’s worth noting that general manager Trent Baalke has a stronger history of trading back as opposed to trading up.
