The Jacksonville Jaguars formally announced their 2024 coaching staff Thursday with nine new hires and two promotions.
The list includes Ryan Nielsen, the team’s new defensive coordinator, who will take over for Mike Caldwell. The Jaguars fired Caldwell after two seasons shortly after the 2023 season ended.
Last week, Nielsen had his first press conference as defensive coordinator for the team and told reporters that he aims to construct an “attacking” and “aggressive” unit in Jacksonville.
Seven of the new hires are on the defensive side of the ball and two are on offense. Two coaches who previously served as quality control coaches were promoted. Here are all 11 coaching changes announced by the Jaguars:
Defensive coordinator: Ryan Nielsen
Nielsen previously spent one season as defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons and six years with the New Orleans Saints where he worked his way up to co-defensive coordinator.
Defensive backs coach: Kris Richard
Richard was co-defensive coordinator of the Saints with Nielsen in 2022 and previously spent three seasons (2015-2017) as defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks.
Inside linebackers coach: Matt House
House spent the last two years as defensive coordinator of the LSU Tigers and previously spent three years as linebackers coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Defensive assistant/cornerbacks coach: Cory Robinson
Robinson spent the last three years as a defensive analyst for the Tennessee Volunteers. Prior to that, he was on the same defensive staff in New Orleans as Nielsen where he was assistant defensive backs coach.
Defensive line coach: Jeremy Garrett
Garrett was on the Browns’ coaching staff for two years before spending the 2022 season at Liberty and the 2023 season at Auburn.
Assistant secondary coach/defensive analyst: Mike Gray
Gray is a Jacksonville native who spent the 2023 season as a defensive analyst on Nielsen’s staff in Atlanta.
Assistant outside linebackers coach: Mario Jeberaeel
Jeberaeel is another coach who was on Nielsen’s staff in Atlanta where he was the special projects – defense coach.
Running backs coach: Jerry Mack
Mack has two decades of collegiate coaching experience, and spent the last three seasons as running backs coach for the Tennessee Volunteers.
Assistant offensive line coach: Greg Austin
Austin is one of two promotees on the list of coaching changes after spending the 2023 season as a quality control coach in Jacksonville. Prior to joining the Jaguars, he coached at FIU, Nebraska, and UCF.
Offensive quality control coach: Jamel Mutunga
Mutunga will fill Austin’s role on the staff after spending 2023 with the Carolina Panthers and 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts.
Assistant inside linebackers coach: Patrick Reilly
While he wasn’t on the list of coaching changes announced Thursday, Reilly joins Austin as the other promotee. He spent the last three seasons as a defensive quality control coach in Jacksonville.
