The Jacksonville Jaguars will have the luxury of entering camp without a single player on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to coach Doug Pederson. That’s a sign that their star running back James Robinson is doing well during his recovery from the Achilles tear he sustained last December.
When speaking with the media on Monday morning before Day 1’s session, Pederson said that the team still plans to take it slow with Robinson before putting him on the field, though he was encouraged by where the third-year running back was.
“It says a lot,” Pederson said when asked about Robinson’s dedication to his recovery process. “It’s a good sign. I know, and I’ve seen how hard he’s worked to get himself back this spring, this summer. He was here all summer working with the guys. […] He’s done a great job to put himself into a position where we don’t have to do that [put him on the PUP list], but still be cautious with him and make sure he’s ready when he’s ready.”
Pederson added that he was ‘hopeful’ about Robinson taking the field in mid-August, but said he didn’t want to put a timetable on it.
Robinson has been the biggest source of offense for the Jags these last two years when on the field and utilized right. He will enter the 2022 season with 40 carries for 1,837 career rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.
As Pederson said, Robinson has been working hard when it comes to his recovery and it’s been well documented on social media. Back in early June, he was seen jogging, and during the pre-camp break, he was seen working on his cutting and change of direction.
If he were to return in the middle of next month, that would be around the time the Jags are getting ready for their second and third preseason games against the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively. Whether he plays in either of those games is unknown at the moment (though he doesn’t have to), but regardless, fans have to like his chances to be ready for the regular season.
