Jack Whitehall says 'I'm coming home Wales' as he heads to Cardiff for gig

Comedian Jack Whitehall is performing his latest stand-up tour, Settle Down, three times over the next two weeks and considering the bloke is part-Welsh, there's no surprise that he's told fans here that he's "coming home".

That's right, back in 2019 Jack and his dad Michael appeared on BBC series Who Do You Think You Are?, and they were bowled over after discovering that Jack's great-great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Jones Phillips, was responsible for the arrest of pro-democracy campaigner John Frost. Read more on that here.

Ahead of his three Welsh dates, July 4, 9 and 10 at Cardiff's CIA and July 11 at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, Jack posted on his Instagram about his upcoming dates and posted a clip of his show with the caption "I'm coming home Wales. 3 shows in Cardiff over the next week." He added that there were a few more tickets on sale for the shows, which you can buy here.

Now a proud Welshman it seems, Jack shared that his dad Michael was struggling with his recently(ish) discovered Welsh roots, saying in the clip about their WDYTYA discovery: "Daddy, you need to look more upset, there are cameras on us all the time, can you at least pretend to be sad?" To which Michael replied: "I am sad, this is all deeply depressing, I had absolutely no idea that we were Welsh!"

Jack responds with a hand waving across his throat, indicating that he was desperate for his dad to shut up. The Whitehalls' ancestor Phillips, mind, wasn't much of a decent fella to shout about in Wales, and Jack's discovery about his family's involvement in Welsh politics leaves him horrified.

He says: "Our great ancestor is gathering evidence to bang up the guys who were fighting for the rights of workers in Wales. He has gone from being an officious windbag to being a full-blown snitch who is trying to stop a mob of people who are fighting for freedom."

Earlier this year we caught up with Jack and he told us: "I love the crowds in Wales - I’ve obviously spent a lot of time there and filmed shows there. I’m really looking forward to that gig, it’ll be great.” You can catch up with that big interview and listen to our podcast with Jack, here.
