The painter Jack Vettriano has died at the age of 73. He was found dead in his apartment in Nice over the weekend, and will be remembered as one of Scotland’s most popular artists.
Born Jack Hoggan in Methil, Fife in 1951, he was a miner’s son who left school at 16 to become an apprentice mining engineer. He took up painting in the 1970s, working in an Impressionist style, but it was only in 1987 at the age of 36, after he left his wife, adopted his mother’s maiden name and began to emulate Guigan, that he began to develop his popular and self-taught style.
