Former special counsel Jack Smith told Senators on Tuesday that his investigation had developed 'proof beyond a reasonable doubt' that Donald Trump had 'engaged in serious crimes against our nation' and said he would make the same decision to prosecute a former president on the same facts, regardless of political party.

Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on 29 September, Smith forcefully defended the two federal cases he brought against Trump and rejected Republican accusations that the investigations were politically motivated.
