What better stamp of approval than to get one of the greatest sports icons of our time to endorse who you are? That’s exactly what happened to Ohio State head coach Ryan Day when arguably the greatest golfer of all time, and a Buckeye himself, Jack Nicklaus, met him and gave him a thumb’s up.
While speaking (subscription may be required) prior to this year’s Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, Nicklaus was asked about his thoughts on Ryan Day.
“First time I had actually met Ryan. What a nice young man,” the 82-year-old Nicklaus said Tuesday during a media session at Muirfield Village Golf Club, site of the annual Memorial Tournament that is lovingly called “Jack’s Tournament.”
“I would call him a young man,” Nicklaus said in jest, of Day who is now 43 years old. “Got his head screwed on great. He says he’s looking forward to this year. He’s going to have a great team.”

I would have loved to be a fly in the butter for the rolls during that dinner. Either way, Day continues to endear himself to current and former Buckeyes, from current players to cultural icons.
Let’s hope that the feelings of this season’s optimism come to fruition somewhere in Inglewood, California.
