In 1910, Jack Chew was searching for a good home for both his family and his cattle. He found it at Pool Creek, within Dinosaur National Monument. The service describes the place as home to three generations of Chews and notes its critical water sources, good winter grazing and timber. According to the National Park Service, the family planted orchards and gardens and dug irrigation ditches, and the home sustained them for more than half a century. In 1966, Jack’s son, Rial Chew, sold the 1,900 acres of the ranch within the monument to the National Park Service.
