Former Manchester United centre-back Jaap Stam believes it is 'difficult' to say whether Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world.

Van Dijk has returned to action after he was sidelined for the majority of the previous campaign with an ACL injury. He has already played 38 games in all competitions this season, totalling over 3,000 minutes for the Reds, and is seemingly back to his best.

But fellow Dutchman Stam says the 30-year-old is still getting back to his 'old level' and names other defenders, including Liverpool team-mate Joel Matip, that could also be regarded as the best in the world.
