Ivana Trump, former president Donald Trump's first wife, died as a result of an accident after suffering blunt trauma injuries to her torso, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) said.
A police spokesperson said on Thursday that Ivana Trump had been found dead on the stairs inside her apartment and that foul play was not suspected.
"The Medical Examiner has determined her cause of death was an accident caused by blunt impact injuries to her torso," OCME said in a statement.
"Having released this determination, OCME will not comment further on the investigation."
The medical examiner's brief report did not specify when the accident took place.
Donald Trump announced on Thursday (local time) that Ivana died at her home near Central Park on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
She was found unconscious after police received an emergency call at 12:40 pm., and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 40-year-old daughter Ivanka Trump paid tribute to her "brilliant" mother alongside a series of images in the wake of the news.
"Heartbroken by the passing of my mother," she wrote.
"Mom was brilliant, charming, passionate and wickedly funny.
She lived life to the fullest — never forgoing an opportunity to laugh and dance.
"I will miss her forever and keep her memory alive in our heart always," she added.
Her son Eric Trump said it was "a very sad day, a very sad day," as he left the home on Thursday.
The Czech-born ski racer and business women was born Ivana Zelníčková in 1949.
She was married to the former president from 1977 to 1992, and they had three children together: Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric.
Her family called her "an incredible woman — a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty and caring mother and friend," and a survivor.
Ivana's death came during a fraught time for the Trump family.
Two of her children, Donald Jr and Ivanka, as well as the former president, were due to appear in the coming days for questioning in the New York Attorney-General's civil investigation into the family's business practices.
But the Attorney-General's office agreed to postpone the depositions — a term for out-of-court questioning under oath — because of Ivana's death.
