ITV This Morning Scottish guests share incredible story after reaching Ukraine border

ITV This Morning's Scottish guests have shared their incredible experience after arriving in Ukraine.

The two Scottish landscape gardeners were held at gunpoint by Russian soldiers and their utilities stolen after making it their goal to get Ukrainian people to safety across the border.

Local heroes Joe McCarthy and Gary Taylor appeared on ITV's This Morning to share their story of how the idea to travel to Ukraine came about, and what they have came across when making the trip to help the people of the decimated country.

Joseph McCarthy, who owns Ready2Rock, and his colleague Gary Taylor set off last week in their work van - which they've kitted out with sleeping bags and food for those most in need.

Speaking to presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield this morning, the two men shared how they broke the news to their family that they were embarking on this dangerous journey.

Joe McCarthy said: "I was uneasy about people walking to the borders on foot, so I said to Gary, I am going to Ukraine.

"And as we packed the tools away and went to drive home, Gary asked who I was going with and I said I’ll be going on my own. So he asked if he could come, and here we are.

"I had said to my wife a couple of times, before I went to bed and she just said stop being silly. And then when I got home the next morning and told her we were actually going to head out to Ukraine, she started to believe me a little bit!"

The journey to the country wasn't without a few hitches, as Joe explained: "It was easy enough to get here. We did hire a car eventually then the car was having some trouble with punctures, and it was a bit small to get enough people across the border.

"So, we just nipped into Romania , bought a people carrier, which is a bit better than a car, got it legal and now we can get in and out of the borders as we please now."

Gary added: " We left the hire car at the garage we bought the people carrier from. We’ve to go back and pick it up on the way home."

However, it wasn't long before the two selfless humans ran into their first patch of trouble, as they described the terrifying ordeal of coming face to face with Russian soldiers.

Gary Taylor, one half of the heroic duo, continued: "It was quite a scary moment for us, they flung us against the side of the van and pointed guns at us and at our heads.

"They ripped the inside of the van out, shot our tires, stole Joes phone.

"They stole all our food, cigarettes, stole everything from the van basically. So it was extremely scary, but we eventually got our van to the locals who fixed the tires and replenished our food and things."

Joe added: "Aye, we were just stopped and our tires shot out, for no reason other than we were passing through the area."

Joe and Gary's families have set up a GoFundMe to keep them subsidised with money for as long as possible, so they can save as many people as possible.

So far, the pair have gotten 11 people across the border, and are two hours away from getting another group to safety today.

When dubbed heroes, Joe brushed off the comments and said: "We’re not heroes, we’re just here helping people and doing what we can to make their lives safer.

"It just so happens to be us, it could be anybody else doing this, we're the ones who bit the bullet and decided to put words into action."
