Phillip Schofield has shared how he and other members of the This Morning team weren't allowed to share one detail from their visit to Buckingham Palace earlier this year. Back in May, the presenter and his co-host Holly Willoughby headed to the late Queen's London residence for a special edition of the daytime show.
The unique programme saw them revamp their classic titles featuring the theme tune being played by a royal band. "This Morning by royal appointment," a message read on screen before the latter part of the message changed to "from Buckingham Palace." Viewers could then see a white taxi making its way through the gates and into the grounds of the London landmark.
"Well, we've made some entrances in our time but this has got to be one of the most special I would have thought," Phillip was heard saying as Holly laughed. She then added: "This is ridiculous! When you think of the people who have driven round in vehicles up to this grand entrance..."
Holly and Phillip then went on to spend an hour broadcasting from the iconic location which saw them learn as much as possible about their grand surroundings while horticultural expert David Domoney explored the Queen’s favourite corners of her garden and chef Phil Vickery head into the Palace's kitchen.
And following Queen Elizabeth II's death last week, This Morning has been revising some of those memories in a series of special tribute shows. On Wednesday's show, Phil Vickery was on hand to make what was the late monarch's favourite Sticky Ginger Loaf Cake under the watchful eye of Yvonne Browne, the Vice President of the Sandringham WI, of which the Queen would have been celebrating 80 years a member in January.
It led to the chef recalling the time he took a tour of the Buckingham Palace kitchens for the ITV programme, Phil revealed something that he wasn't allowed to speak about before now. While in the royal kitchen, he says a chef started to make some sandwiches in a very "meticulous" way after getting told something by a colleague.
He recalled how the chef sliced smoked salmon "so thinly" that a "newspaper could be read" through it. "What I noticed was, he'd made them in two layers, all cut in fingers," Phil explained. And every finger that was cut, even the corner of the finger was cut off meticulously with a very small knife."
He then went on to say: "I believe the Queen had come back from opening Crossrail at the time and popped back for her lunch. And I'm sure that was for her." Host Phillip, 60, then added: "I expect the fact that we weren't allowed to talk about it is the fact that it was," to which Phil replied: "Let's assume."
