ITV This Morning's Holly Willoughby gags as Phil Schofield eats squirrel live on air

Holly Willoughby gagged as a squirrel was cooked live on This Morning.

The 42-year-old presented today's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme alongside Phillip Schofield. The two fronted another jam packed programmes, which included interviews with Emmerdale's Dominic Brunt and Strictly Come Dancing's Anton du Beke.

The presenters were joined by Tom Swarbrick and Anushka Asthana as they discussed the latest morning headlines. The panel reacted to how Exmoor Squirrel Project has encouraged people to eat grey squirrels to save the red squirrel.

Exmoor Squirrel Project said this is a "humane" way to cull grey squirrels as they have had a deadly impact on the native red squirrel. Phil said: "I understand that it is a highly emotive subject and if you are vegetarian or vegan then this is horrific to imagine."

Chef Phil Vickery was hosting the cooking segment on today's show and arrived on set with two grey squirrel based dishes. Host Phil proceeded to tuck in and declared he was a fan.

He said: "If you gave me that I wouldn't know what it was. It could be chicken, it could be a little bit poke."

Holly gasped as the dish was passed over her. She said: "It's so weird. I can already feel it in my throat where it makes me feel a bit gippy. But it's the idea."

Fans following the show on Twitter were split by the segment.

Fee said: "no I couldn’t eat squirrel! I feed them where I live and I like them so I couldn’t!"

Dave added: "Absolutely not"

Tina posted: "Squirrel risotto? That’s appalling"

Victoria said: "Phil is right though there will be outrage on here about them eating squirrel yet we eat little lamb and cow etc"

Peter added: "I'm up for eating grey squirrel if it helps with the increase of the red squirrel."

Bepop posted: "If you aren't vegetarian you can't really get squeamish over eating squirrel"
