In a rather surprising turn of events, Tom Bradby came in for plenty of praise from ITV viewers who tuned into watch his Prince Harry interview on Sunday night, after plenty of scepticism and criticism over him being the journalist to do it.
In the run up to Christmas, it was announced that News at Ten host Tom would be going over to America to take part in a candid sit down chat with the Duke of Sussex and new monarch King Charles III's youngest son. Given that Tom was considered to be 'friends' with Harry and had previously interviewed his wife, Meghan Markle, more than a few eyebrows were raised about him doing the interview, with critics arguing that he'd give Harry an 'easy ride.'
In the days leading up to Harry: The Interview airing on ITV1, various clips of what viewers could expect were released, including an explosive one featuring Prince Harry's claim that he and elder brother Prince William got into a physical altercation over Meghan back in 2019.
The first question acclaimed broadcaster Tom put to Harry in the opening moments of their chat, was the one many viewers wanted the answer to...'why?' attempting to get to the bottom of Harry's decision to do the interview and write his book Spare, which will be released this week.
While, during the course of the 95 minute interview, Tom showed a certain degree of empathy to Harry, he also didn't shy away from asking difficult questions, including one where he accused the Duke of being 'scathing' about his stepmother Camilla, with Harry having to reassure Tom he was now 'at peace' with Charles and Camilla's marriage.
And, there was plenty of praise for Tom on Twitter, including posts from those who'd been convinced he would be 'too soft' on Harry. One tweeted: "I think Tom Bradby is doing a good job. His approach seems very balanced. It’s not a softball interview, but at the same time it’s not overly harsh," with another reacting: "I think Tom Bradby is doing a good job. I'm not watching a push-over, sycophantic Oprah style interview."
Also impressed with Tom, a third posted: "Tom Bradby doing a good job here. Balanced, deeply probing, empathetic"
