ITV Love Island official complaints rise as viewers share anger over islanders' behaviour

Complaints made about this year's Love Island have continued to grow ahead of the final. The ITV2 dating show returned to screens early last month and is due to end on Monday (August 1). And it has been another dramatic series and not just on-screen as thousands of viewers have flocked to make official complaints.

Last week it was confirmed that thousands of complaints had been made to Ofcom in the space of one week. The broadcasting watchdog revealed that 2,481 viewers contacted them on July 17, to complain over alleged misogynistic behaviour by some of the male contestants. It comes after Luca’s sister issued a statement to apologise on behalf of her brother, saying they didn't condone his behaviour following the fallout from Movie Night.

A further 427 people contacted the broadcasting watchdog following the episode of Aftersun, the spin-off programme which airs weekly, on the same night to hit out at the comments made about Ekin-Su and the treatment of Jacques O’Neill, who quit the villa earlier in the week, during his interview with Laura Whitmore.

Viewers flocked to social media to share their concern for the rugby player as he appeared on the ITV2 show to talk about his time on the show and the real reason behind his sudden exit. The complaints continued on July 18, when the regulator received 413 complaints relating to alleged bullying and misogynistic behaviour from some of the male contestants. Prior to that, 167 complaints were lodged following the episode on July 15, with viewers taking issue with footage of Ekin-Su and new boys George getting close under the covers during Casa Amor.

And now it has been revealed that Love Island has prompted a further 1,509 complaints to Ofcom in the aftermath of its Snog, Marry, Pie challenge. The task saw the islanders reveal who they would kiss, marry or hit in the face with a cream pie. Dancer and model Tasha Ghouri was left in tears over comments Luca and Dami Hope made before delivering a pie to her face.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said the majority of complaints about the episode on Tuesday, July 19, related to alleged misogynistic behaviour from the boys to the girls, including in the aftermath of the challenge. Another 146 were made about the Sunday, July 17, episode, with those relating to the behaviour and treatment of contestants during and in the aftermath of Movie Night.

There were also 351 complaints made about the episode on Monday, July 18, with the majority being about the alleged misogynistic and allged bullying behaviour of contestants. Movie Night, which came after the islanders were reunited following Casa Amor, saw them shown footage of their partners being tempted by newcomers or being unfaithful.

Ofcom said in a statement: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."
